What is the filter element made off?
What is the filter element made off?
The combination of a microfilter ceramic outer, granular activated carbon and heavy metal removal media effectively reduces a range of different contaminants, including bacteria, trace organics, enhanced organics, pharmaceuticals, PFAS and heavy metals such as lead
How the filter Works
How the filter Works
How the filter works
Our ceramic filter element uses a four-stage filtration process to reduce a wide range of unwanted contaminants while helping preserve the natural minerals found in water.
Stage 1: Ceramic microfiltration
The outer ceramic layer captures bacteria, cysts, sediment, and other fine particles through sub-micron filtration.
Stage 2: Antibacterial protection
Silver ions embedded within the ceramic help inhibit the growth of microorganisms on the filter itself, supporting cleaner and longer-lasting performance.
Stage 3: Activated carbon filtration
A core of granular activated carbon reduces chlorine and a variety of organic compounds, helping improve the taste and smell of your drinking water.
Stage 4: Heavy metal & PFAS reduction
A specialised filtration medium helps reduce contaminants such as lead and PFAS from your water.
- Filters particles down to 0.5 microns
- Up to approximately 1500 litres filtration capacity per candle
- Gravity-fed filtration (no electricity required)
- Compatible with claii water filters
- Long-lasting ceramic filtration technology
How are the natural minerals preserved?
How are the natural minerals preserved?
Beneficial minerals such as calcium, magnesium and potassium exist in water as tiny dissolved, electrically charged particles called ions.
They are much smaller than contaminants like bacteria, microplastics and sediment, so they pass straight through the ceramic’s microscopic pores, keeping the natural minerals your body needs.
Replacement Guide
Replacement Guide
For best filtration performance, we recommend replacing your filter candle approximately every 6 months.
Replacement frequency can vary depending on your water quality and daily usage. In areas with higher levels of sediment or contaminants, the filter may need replacing sooner.

The Doulton British Berkefeld Ultra Sterasyl (part W9121226) is the replacement filter candle for your Claii ceramic water filter.
The candle is a ceramic shell with an activated carbon core. The ceramic handles sediment and particulates; the carbon block inside reduces chlorine, taste and odour, lead, PFAS and microplastics. Claii publishes the full laboratory reports on the Test Reports page.
Claii uses a Doulton Ultra Sterasyl element, certified to NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 401.
Lifespan. Around 1,500 litres, or up to six months in typical household use. Hard water and heavy use shorten it; a household of two drinking only filtered water will usually get closer to six months than three. Flow runs at roughly one to two litres per hour by gravity alone — slower than mains pressure, which is what allows the contact time the carbon needs.
Care. Brush the outside of the ceramic under running water when the flow slows noticeably. The surface is designed to be cleaned this way and will recover most of its rate. Replace the candle rather than cleaning it once it has reached the end of its rated volume.
Made by Doulton. Doulton has been making ceramic filtration in Staffordshire, England since 1826. The candles are manufactured there and shipped to Claii's workshop in Portugal.
